FRANCE, 1593
And the wolves are stirring. As humans boldly tread the boundaries of the wild and the civilised, there is an urge to kill and reclaim the land being steadily lost. The wolves are not afraid, but this does not make them smart. Revenge and anger only ever mixed a bitter drink, and there were few wolves that succeeded in surviving their own campaigns of murder and blood lust. Others watched, however, and considered the mistakes of their brethren. Humans were smart, too smart for the wolves to beat them, but not smart enough to eradicate them. While whole packs tried to slaughter villages and destroy livestock, others kept to themselves amongst the trees. Some, on the other hand, wandered the outskirts of cities and towns, and they began to learn.

It was not a process that could ever have been accomplished by them all. Only certain wolves had the time and capacity to think this way, to slow adopt the mannerisms and characteristics of the humans they observed, willing their bodies to shift and change from their natural form into one that was foreign to them. Naked and without fur, wandering about on two legs. For many wolves this change read as an insult, spitting upon the power that they commanded as wolves, admitting defeat to the humans for turning into them. This was not of any particular concern to the wolves that chose this transformation; they were not going to argue with those of their kind willing to die in the throes of their pride instead of adapting to the dangers they were now presented with.

These wolves wanted to survive.

To The Bone is set in a world very much like our own, where a select number of shape-shifting creatures, most of which immortal, roam amongst humans, either to explore their way of life or to adapt to it in order to survive. The most prominent of these creatures are wolf-like and without a name. They are their own species, aging slowly, procreating only with one another, and keeping both their feral and more humanized characteristics in either shape. Despite being free to change it whenever they desire, these wolves must still keep their original form for a certain length of time and must still engage in their natural activities - such as hunting and feeding on what they kill - in order to maintain their health. History: If there is anything that can be said for Carmo Correia, it is that life's hardships have never brought her down. Having always been a rather bright and lively child, born to a very traditional family pack who were impossibly proud of their feral heritage, though this never stopped Carmo from being precocious, curious and hard to pin down. She had boundless amounts of energy and little attention to spare for things that she thought were superfluous or boring. Most of her time was spent running around the woods outside the small town where she lived with her parents, the Duartes, scuffing her knees and ripping her dresses, making friends with local children despite her parents not thinking them particularly suitable for their daughter. It wasn't too long before Mrs Duarte stopped buying and mending her daughter's dresses, and started buying and mending her trousers, which in turn made Carmo terribly happy, because climbing trees was much easier with trousers, and the boys couldn't laugh about seeing up her skirt anymore.

She was intelligent, and at the very least enjoyed learning, particularly languages, proving to be quite proficient in English and French on top of her native Portuguese from an early age. Her family was never quite sure what to do with their exceptionally enthusiastic daughter, never quite approving of her restlessness, having quite neatly drummed in their stoic ethic into their elder son, Vasco, who had been born almost a hundred years before Carmo. So far, Carmo has only ever met her brother a few times, and their relationship is both strained and practically non-existent. She got along reasonably well with her parents; most relatives and friends said that if anything, she mellowed them and made them softer people.

Things changed in Carmo's life when she was fifteen, and she met André properly for the first time. He was a boy she had seen (or so she thought, he and his twin brother looked terribly similar, after all) around the town but had never really met, and his quietness somehow attracted her loud curiosity, and despite their very different personalities, they got along very well. It didn't take long for a mutual attraction to blossom, and their relationship was warmly received by both of their families. They thought it to be a very beneficial match, with Carmo's parents hoping that her more reserved boyfriend would serve to soothe her wilder nature. The way that Andy and Carmo were together made everyone think that they could easily stand the test of time, and they developed a very strong bond very quickly, but no one thought it had happened too quickly until over a year later.

Just a few weeks shy of her seventeenth birthday, Carmo revealed to her and Andy's families that she was pregnant, a decision only taken because she was starting to show. This information outraged both families, with Carmo and Andy's protests that they wanted to keep the child and raise it themselves being drowned out by a chorus of shouting and name calling between their parents, each trying to blame the other for the apparent transgressions of their children. Given that both Carmo and Andy were teenagers only by human standards and not by wolves, the whole matter seemed completely preposterous, as it was usually traditional for couples only to have children at least fifty years into their lives. Carmo's family said the whole thing moved at too disgustingly human a pace, and demanded that Carmo either terminate the pregnancy or give the child up. Neither of these were options that Carmo was willing to entertain, and being strong willed enough, not the slightest bit afraid of her family, it was eventually decided that she and Andy could keep the child in their care.

By the time Carmo gave birth to their son, Tomás, most people thought that she and Andy would have cracked under the strain of the pressure and tension that surrounded them, and gone their separate ways, but in reality, their relationship strengthened to a point that shocked and confused their families. Through Andy's hard work and a great deal of planning on their part, when Carmo finally turned eighteen, she and Andy got married secretly and left, with their son, to go to London.

The transition was strenuous and difficult. It was the kind of time that again, could make or break a couple, but the newly married Correias were stronger than ever as they tried to settle in a completely new and strange place, balancing caring for their son with their duties to themselves and their bodies as wolves as reasonably as they could. Once they could roam together as wolves in vast countryside, and now they had to go it alone in dark, and unfamiliar streets. Their son proved something of a handful; they could see how he took after Carmo in some respects early on, given his tendency to bite everything as soon as he had teeth and turn unexpectedly from human to wolf pup and vice versa. There was no explaining to a child so young that he couldn't just change whenever he pleased - it was always highly dependent on his moods, which were changeable - Carmo took the responsibility of looking after Tomás at home while Andy ventured into London to work. In time, Carmo found herself jobs here and there with translating, doing what she could from their small home, bringing in whatever money she could to help supplement Andy's wages.

Now, Carmo is twenty two years old, Andy is twenty three, and their lively son is five. The years that they have spent so far in London have been very formative to the way that Carmo and Andy grew up, rather suddenly, but now they are more comfortable in a place they're happy to call their home, and still grossly in love with each other. Tomás is still a little unpredictable, and Carmo still home tutors him until she's sure that he's ready for school with a bunch of human kids. She has a steady (albeit unofficial) job as a translator for a small international law firm, the kind that has enough money to give her a tidy wage and enough money to get away with doing it off the record, though she still dreams of having the chance to go to university and take some proper language courses, or explore other avenues of learning. This, however, she has left as something to work towards once she knows that her family is safe, comfortable and perfectly settled.

Personality: From a very young age, Carmo was always assertive, occasionally but moderately bossy, loud and dominant. It's hard to forget her after you'd met her once, and she seems to make a point of establishing herself amongst strangers without really trying at all. She likes being in the centre of attention just as much as she likes to be on the outskirts, taking as much pleasure in receiving attention as giving it. She's almost infinitely friendly, preferring to give people the benefit of the doubt rather than rushing to conclusions. In some ways she seems to overshadow her husband when the two of them are together amongst others, but she always tries to involve him in everything ever, and the fact that she takes the reigns in many situations that involve both of them has never appeared to put any strains on her relationship with Andy.

Absolutely shameless, there is little that Carmo won't talk about or entertain. While Andy is quite set in his beliefs in matters such as tradition or religion, Carmo likes to be a touch more open minded and willing to regard all available opinions, even if she's note likely to change her own. In many ways she can be embarrassing to others, rarely to herself, taking most things with a pinch of salt and despairing over people's taboos and delicate sensibilities. She loves to tease and make people feel just a teeny bit uncomfortable so that she can swoop in and make them feel better again.

Becoming a mother at a young age, after the initial difficulties, suited Carmo very well; she has an enormous heart and loves to be a mother hen, with impossible amounts of patience for her family or those she might consider to be family. This doesn't mean she coddles her son, or anyone else for that matter. Being an outdoorsy and sturdy child makes her want the same of others, and she likes to be challenging and firm and active, to fill everything that she does with some kind of character building purpose. She doesn't tolerate bad behaviour and she'll let you know all about it. For all her patience and inherent kindness, though, Carmo is doggedly loyal and even more protective. A bad word about her family and she'll be snapping out a few choice words your way if not her teeth too. She can sometimes be blind to the less desirable traits of people if she cares for them, and being generally stubborn, is stubborn of changing her opinions once she has formed them.

It's hard to bring Carmo down; she's turned having a positive outlook on situations into a fine art, though it doesn't mean she doesn't have her doubts. As open as she is, in other ways she can be far more withdrawn, preferring to try and deal with her own problems by herself rather than let anyone else know about them. In the end the only person she really trusts beyond herself is Andy, and even then she may hesitate telling him her doubts and worries because she doesn't want to bring him down with her, and she knows how he is.

As a wolf, Carmo's personality is not strongly different from the way she is as a person. Naturally more instinctive and a little more rash than she might normally be, she is continually affectionate and genuinely rather a polite wolf, all things considered. You don't want to catch her at the wrong moment, though, because she will be much quicker to bite you as a wolf than she is as a human, and being the type of person that she is, her bite is just as bad as her bite depending on the situation.

Abilities, Weaknesses and Power Limitations:
WOLF | Because of her heritage as a wolf, Carmo has excellent senses and as a wolf is a damn sight stronger than your average wild animal. She is immortal in the sense that she is not affected by ageing and is generally immune diseases back home (there's no telling what could happen in space, though). Her psychological state is, as with most wolves, controlled by how much she spends as a wolf and as a human, because too much of the latter can lead to serious deterioration. As a rule, Carmo is very good at balancing the two, but she might be more dubious about spending time as a wolf on board the ship given that it maybe a huge space but it's still an enclosed space, and the risk of exposure is higher. Capable of understanding human language as a wolf, though not responding, and tends to have a rather domestic dog type attitude as a wolf.

HUMAN | Though she will heal very well and quickly if injured, Carmo's human side seems not to differ greatly from the human forms of most people. Shifting between human and wolf, however, generally requires a fair amount of nakedness, which Andy seems to find unfortunate, but Carmo doesn't mind so much. It's all a case of planning, and Carmo's fairly good at that. She's still quite breakable as a human, and if you snap her arm it'll heal in a day or two, but it'll still hurt like hell. She is fluent in both Portuguese and English, and has a conversational level of French under her belt too.

MOTHER | Will always look after everyone and care for them and treat them as her own if she can. She's fiercely protective, sometimes even over the wrong kinds of people, but she's always determined to see the good in someone before the bad. If you don't need mothering, then instead she'll be your best friend, and quite possibly give you advice when you least expect, want or need it, and she has some slightly nosy tendencies.

Log Sample:
Everything twists and churns around her in unfamiliar shapes and colours, and the dullness of her senses makes her feel almost as sick as the general cloud of nausea that cling to the walls of her stomach. Something pulses and pounds in her head, blood and thoughts and worries, concerns for the unknown sensations when she's so used to being alert, aware. This isn't right, and it scares her more than anything else right now.

Sinking carefully to her knees as she climbs from the pod, she focuses on trying to regain herself above all else. Everything she does is slow, careful, registering that she's naked but being entirely unconcerned by it. That's not unfamiliar at all. As the shapes of her own knees swim back into focus, she allows herself to lift her gaze at the meaningless faces all around her, her eyes widening as she tries to look for something, anything that she could recognise. It's only now that the mild feeling of dread in the back of her mind starts to fill all her senses, picking up on hints of fear amidst the others around her, annoyance in others, strange scents scratching at her nose. She becomes fully aware of how disgusting she feels, how the liquid clinging to her skin feels strangely suffocating.

She hates how her voice trembles as she tests it out, soft and uncertain, calling for the only person she knows could reliably answer.

"Querido?"

Comms Sample:
[ She speaks with a light, soft voice, distinctly accented, with occasional moments of unusual intonation, though her English is otherwise pristine. There's a slight discomfort in her tone that seems oddly foreign, as if it doesn't belong there. ]

I can't say that I'm very fussy when it comes to the finer things in life, but I really hope that whenever they perfect space travel back home they don't decide on such a depressing design. Apparently homey charm and advanced technology are mutually exclusive! [ A sigh, and a pause. ] Still, can't trust anywhere that's happy to take a mother and father away from their child, I suppose. I don't mean to sound all miserable on my first time here, but I think I'm pretty justified, at least.

Anyway, sad things aside, my name is Carmo, and I'm new. It feels a little like I'm in school again. [ She seems to brighten a little as she goes on, ] I'm sure some of you have met my husband Andy, too - and I think I need to say thank you to someone, ah, Josh, I think? For finding some valuable items that Andy misplaced.

[ If there's a sort of twinkling sound in her words, now, it's because she's this much closer to being able to lovingly berate her dear Andy. ]
